This American Life focuses on a group of surveyors in California and their findings about the best way to change people’s minds. In the study they found that the best way to change someone’s mind was to make a connection opposite of what they disagree with. The surveyors focused on convincing people who voted for proposition 8, a law that would make it illegal for gay people to get married, and they attempted to change their mind on how they would vote in future votes on the subject. What they found is that the best way to change someone’s mind is to do so subtly without actually telling them. They found that building a connection between the surveyor and the surveyed was important. They also found that many people could change their minds but that change had to come from themselves, very few times did someone pointing something out to a person make them change their mind.
