Gladwell questions

Gladwell’s main criticism of online social activism mainly focuses on 2 main points; its strength, and what it targets. Gladwell argues that the strength of social media is weak because the ties that bind people to whatever cause they are arguing for are also weak. He also disapproves of what it targets, giving examples of a teenager who stole a phone and whom the internet found. In terms of the strength aspect, I don’t see it quite as strongly. We can often feel tied to those we have no knowledge about. And the sweeping changes Gladwell compares this against don’t necessarily need to be tied to prior organizations. What I do agree with though is who the internet targets. Often the internet is focused on trivial pursuits like video games or movies. However, what is also true is that when the internet targets something actually important, they can get results. There’s a reason the topic of cancel culture is a hot debate online.
