The Empathy Diary Questions
When Tuckle says we have undergone a “flight from conversation” she means that people today aren’t seeking face-to-face interactions in the same way they would previously. She argues that instead they prefer interactions online over those that we have in real life. In a way, I do agree with her. Especially growing up, I would prefer online games and other technologies over making friends. I still made friends, but nothing solid and nothing particularly strong. However, what I disagree with is the idea that people will eventually forgo these in person connections for those online. Going back to me, I want to make those face-to-face connections now more than any other point in my life now that I’m in college, even though I still have all those online resources. And, even though my social life is an edge case, I have a feeling I’m not unique in this regard. I believe that humans need those connections to other human beings in order to function. The problem is that it’s easier to avoid the process of starting those connections, to put off doing so.
